To just hit “Play” listen on Spotify and YouTube.
This is a brain scratcher of a track. It’s got the perfect ethereal grunge vibes for this episode.
Hi, it’s Cara, welcome to the sunshine lounge: a feel-good mix of today’s music and poetry (usually). Today you’ll hear a spectrum of indie girl vibes with a short story by Morghen Tidd.
Morghen Tidd (she/her) holds an MA in English from the University of Maine, where she was the Ulrich Wicks Teaching Assistant. She is a former-teacher-turned-bartender-turned-grant-writer and lives in Maine with her two parrots and partner. Today, you’ll hear her story ghost of girl from her debut book, girl thing.
CONTENT WARNING for animal harm.
So unclench your jaw, take a deep breath, and settle in for golden hour in the sunshine lounge.
The perfect song for a story about a ghost girl. Ash The Ghost is totally underrated. If you loved Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller check out ribcage, a song about Achilles and Patroclus.
“A side of me says pick me like flowers from the pavement.” Before we get to the haunting, enjoy this sunny indie track with a summer-easy beat.
“she rises no drip from the water.
she rises all gray.”
The rhythm on this track is viscous. Sticky gumlike. All gray.
Funeral black. Funeral tears. Deep distaste. “I’ve been thinkin how I’ve battled with myself. Made my mom proud but fucked my mental health. You kept me down and I’ll never be the same. You’re the one to blame.”
“a dream to leave a sentence to stay though cruelty of the world is no surprise to girls.”
The dream. Ascension. Rest.
“I was told the grass is greener, but it’s just a fantasy it seems.” Letting go of the dream, the yearning. Tasting the bitter sentence of staying.
“bare feet above dustballs a glide more than a walk but she is just as much girl as ghost. forever the phase of in between.”
This Valencia Grace track is Kiki Rockwell meets Florence + The Machine. It’s dark and ghoulish. Witchy under a new moon sky.
Jesse Detor is a new find for me, and a quick favorite. This song was a no-brainer pick for this indie girl episode.
“she tries to sing to his tune. instead of a voice all that leaves her mouth is water. maybe her voice is but a leak.”
“I share this fate, this common ache. I’m just like the other girls.” Things turn dank and vengeful. Time rots. Molds. The house sags under the girl fate. She screams silent water.
“Will God forgive me for the things I’ve done?”
“in her room she rips wallpaper stripping it baring the mold beneath. pulling long strips top to bottom side to side. they never come to check on this room this sound of mice of course just mice.”
Thanks so much for listening. Get a copy of Morghen’s book, girl thing, from long day press. And connect with her on Instagram at spookymorghen.
